A judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil, Alexandre de Moraes, authorized former president Jair Bolsonaro on Friday to leave the federal police headquarters, where he is serving a 27-year prison sentence, to undergo a surgical procedure. The decision came following a request made by Bolsonaro's lawyer, who also asked for the former leader to serve his sentence at home, a request that was denied.

Bolsonaro was convicted in September for inciting a coup after losing the 2022 elections to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Federal police doctors recommended the surgical intervention for a hernia, and the judge noted that Bolsonaro is close to the hospital where he will receive emergency medical care.
