The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, announced that he will propose to the European Union the inclusion of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the list of terrorist organizations, in response to the brutal repression in Iran, which has led to the death of approximately 6,000 people. Tajani emphasized the need for a clear response from the international community and mentioned that he will coordinate this proposal with European partner allies. Additionally, he will suggest individual sanctions against those responsible for the violence against protesters.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, created in 1979, is accused of orchestrating the repression and controls a vast network of intelligence services and armed forces. Although it has already been sanctioned by the EU for human rights violations, Italy is now seeking a firmer action against the abuses of the regime in Tehran.
