The Italian government has adopted two decrees to regulate the use of AI in education and security forces, which must be approved by Parliament.

The Council of Ministers in Rome has adopted two decrees regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the education sector and by security forces, measures that must be approved by Parliament within 60 days. Italy thus becomes the first country with a comprehensive national legal framework in the field of AI, according to Undersecretary of State Alfredo Mantovano.

The decree for law enforcement stipulates that AI must not replace human decisions and that its use must be proportional and subject to human oversight. Additionally, the mass collection of information for the enrichment of databases is prohibited. In education, the decree introduces standards for training young people about the risks associated with AI and will integrate the subject into the school curriculum. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized the importance of regulating AI, mentioning the risks to democracy and the necessity for AI-generated images to be clearly marked.
