Minister of Foreign Affairs Dan Neculăescu said Wednesday that artificial intelligence has become a foreign policy and security priority, following Romania’s participation in the international meeting “A Call for Control of Frontier AI Models,” initiated by Finland and Norway.
The head of Romania’s diplomacy argued that the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies must be accompanied by human oversight, high safety standards and clear rules to prevent abusive use. The main risks mentioned include cyberattacks, disinformation and the use of AI in military applications.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Neculăescu highlighted the direct implications of these technologies for democracy, the economy and international security. Romania supports effective mechanisms to protect fundamental rights, democratic values and international law.
Leaders from 31 countries took part in the online meeting. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb stressed that governments must take warnings about AI risks seriously. Experts from the participating countries are expected to examine possible common standards and international mechanisms for the safer use of advanced models.
