On Sunday and Monday, Italians are expected to take part in five referendums, including one proposing to reduce the period for obtaining citizenship from ten to five years. The government led by Giorgia Meloni is urging an absentee turnout, prompting protests from the opposition, which says the vote is important. Although left-wing parties support the referendums, polls show low awareness of the referendums and an estimated turnout of less than 50% needed to validate them. The referendums also aim to repeal some labour rules and union leaders are hoping for a massive mobilization of citizens.
