Representatives of Israel and Lebanon resumed discussions in Washington on Thursday, just days before a ceasefire was set to expire, in a context where Israeli attacks have continued, causing hundreds of casualties. The Israeli army announced new strikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, and recent bombings have resulted in the deaths of 22 people.

This is the third meeting between the two countries, which do not have diplomatic relations, and it is taking place at the State Department. Although Donald Trump expressed hope for a historic rapprochement, the meeting with the leaders of the two countries has not materialized.

Hezbollah has rejected negotiations, accusing Israel of unjustified concessions. The ceasefire has been extended until May 17, but Israeli attacks have led to the deaths of over 400 people since its inception. Washington emphasizes the importance of restoring the authority of the Lebanese state and disarming Hezbollah, while Lebanon seeks to solidify the ceasefire.
