The Israeli parliament (Knesset) has adopted a new law that allows for the death penalty and the organization of public trials for individuals involved in the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, when over 1,200 civilians were killed and 251 were kidnapped.

The law was adopted with 93 votes in favor and none against, having the support of both the government and the opposition. The politicians who initiated the law believe it will allow for a historic trial, similar to that of Adolf Eichmann, who was convicted for Holocaust crimes. Human rights groups criticize the law, warning about the risks of show trials.

The new legislation creates a special framework for holding accountable captured Hamas members accused of serious crimes, including terrorism and genocide, who will be brought before a special military court. Key moments of the trial will be broadcast publicly. Victims of the October 7 attack participated in parliamentary discussions, highlighting the personal impact of these tragic events.
