Iris Stalzer, the recently elected mayor of the city of Herdecke, was attacked with a knife in front of her house, suffering 13 stab wounds. The attack, carried out by several men, occurred shortly after she took office. Stalzer, 57 years old, was found by her son and is in critical condition. Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other political leaders condemned the act, highlighting the growing climate of violence in local politics. The motive for the attack remains unknown.
