Tehran is celebrating Wednesday 47 years since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, which replaced the historic monarchy with a theocratic regime. The commemorations took place against a backdrop of violent reactions to anti-government protests, which have eroded trust in the country's leadership. Although state television broadcast images of thousands of government supporters burning American flags and chanting anti-American slogans, there were also protests where shouts against the regime were heard.
President Masoud Pezeshkian promised that Iran would not yield to Washington's excessive demands and reaffirmed the peaceful nature of the country's nuclear program. Despite calls for dialogue, tensions with the U.S. remain high, and Pezeshkian apologized for the violence during the suppression of protests, without acknowledging the role of security forces. The 1979 revolution was the result of dissatisfaction with the corruption and repression of the Shah, supported by foreign powers.
