Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an agreement with Australia for the supply of uranium, intended for the development of civil nuclear energy in India.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Thursday, during a visit to Australia, the signing of an important agreement for the supply of uranium from Australia to India, aimed at developing the civil nuclear sector. The agreement was reached following a meeting with his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, and will allow for long-term exports of uranium for exclusively peaceful purposes.

This agreement is intended to support India in increasing its energy capacity from non-fossil sources. Although a bilateral agreement on atomic energy was signed in 2015, legal barriers have hindered actual trade between the two countries.

Relations between Australia and India have recently strengthened in the context of countering Chinese ambitions in the Asia-Pacific region. Modi will be warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora in Melbourne, where the participation of 20,000 people is expected. After Australia, the Indian Prime Minister will continue his tour in New Zealand.
