On Friday, the European Commission adopted the decision by which Hungary becomes the 25th member state of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), after requesting to join in May 2026. This decision reflects Hungary's commitment to strengthening the rule of law and will allow the EPPO to have a permanent presence in the country, protecting EU funds against financial crime.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that this step is essential in the fight against fraud and corruption, providing Hungarian citizens with the guarantee that EU funds are used in their interest. The decision will come into effect 20 days after publication in the Official Journal, and Hungarian authorities must propose candidates for the positions of European prosecutor.

The EPPO will be able to investigate crimes related to EU funds committed in Hungary from June 1, 2021, thus having a significant impact on the protection of the Union's budget.
