The government in Budapest announced the ban on the export of fuel oil, diesel, and gasoline with an octane rating of 95, as a response to the rising oil prices. The Hungarian Minister of Economy, Marton Nagy, specified that a quantity will be taken from the oil reserves for a period of 45 days. Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that fuel prices will be capped, starting at midnight, to protect Hungarian citizens from the impact of rising prices caused by the war in the Middle East. The price of gasoline will be limited to 595 forints (1.75 dollars) per liter, and that of diesel to 615 forints (1.81 dollars) per liter, applying to individuals, farmers, and transporters.
Orban cited the blockage of the Druzhba oil pipeline as a contributing factor to this decision. Additionally, he called on the European Union to suspend sanctions against Russian oil and gas. Previously, Hungary capped fuel prices between November 2021 and June 2022, but abandoned this measure due to fuel shortages. On international markets, the price of oil fell on Tuesday morning, after exceeding 100 dollars per barrel on Monday, amid fears related to the war in the Middle East.
