The leader of Hong Kong, John Lee, announced on Tuesday the formation of an independent commission led by a judge to investigate the devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex, which resulted in 151 deaths. Authorities have determined that the fire, the worst in decades, spread rapidly due to improper construction materials. Lee emphasized the need to reform the construction system to prevent similar tragedies in the future, mentioning the identification of several deficiencies in safety and maintenance standards. So far, 14 people have been arrested, 13 of whom for negligence in duty. The incident has generated a strong emotional reaction among the population, and a student was arrested for calling for government accountability. The fire at Wang Fuk Court has been declared the deadliest in the world since 1980, and the police have continued searches in the affected buildings, finding the remains of victims.
