Ukrainian company HIMERA and Danish firm GomSpace have launched OBRIA NANO into orbit, the first test satellite intended for a future independent Ukrainian communications network. The satellite was sent into space on October 1, 2026, as part of SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission, and is currently operational.
OBRIA NANO will be used to test the technologies needed to design the operational system. The satellite will operate under the control of a Ukrainian operator and support Ukraine’s strategic security objectives.
In the long term, HIMERA and GomSpace aim to develop a satellite constellation that will provide communications coverage across Ukraine and complement the capabilities of European networks. The initiative is driven by the need to diversify communications channels and reduce dependence on foreign providers, which is considered a strategic risk during the war.
The next stage involves locating satellite and ground-terminal production in Ukraine. GomSpace is a provider of small-satellite solutions and previously agreed with Ukrainian company Stetman to establish a joint venture for manufacturing satellites in Ukraine.
