The Greek state plans to subsidize weekend taxi rides in order to discourage drunk driving. The initiative aims to reduce accidents caused by drivers drinking at parties. However, taxi driver associations are concerned that lower fares will attract problem customers. In parallel, draft legislation for tougher sanctions against drunk drivers is in the pipeline, with police catching more than 30,000 such drivers last year.
