Four units at the Gravelines nuclear power plant have been shut down due to a "massive and unpredictable presence of jellyfish" which blocked the filters of the pumping stations used to cool the reactors. EDF assured that the automatic shutdowns had no consequences on the safety of the installations or the environment. Plants 1 and 5 were already under maintenance, leading to a complete shutdown. Although the incident is not unprecedented, the size and timing of the jellyfish complicated the reaction of the technical teams. The authorities are monitoring the situation and estimates for the resumption of production are after cleaning up the affected systems.
