Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant’s Units 1 and 2 are being kept in a safe shutdown state, Nuclearelectrica announced on Thursday. The company said the situation complies with nuclear safety rules and standards and poses no risks to nuclear safety.

The latest development is an approximately 10-centimeter increase in the water level in the plant’s pump intake basin, following a rise in the Danube’s water level. The development is considered positive, but for now it is not supported by a general increase in the river’s level upstream from Cernavodă.

According to Nuclearelectrica, the water level remains below the threshold required to restart one or both units. It must be maintained for several days and show an upward trend. Current forecasts do not indicate that all criteria for resuming operations will be met.

The company is monitoring hydrological data and cooperating with the authorities, and will request the plant’s reconnection to the National Energy System as soon as conditions allow safe operation.

The National Committee for Emergency Situations has extended by 30 days the state of alert regarding the plant’s operations. The measure is based on the Danube’s low levels and the risk of difficulties in supplying electricity during peak hours.
