The Energy Institute report shows that global demand for natural gas in 2024 grew by 2.5%, reinforcing its importance in the global energy mix, despite the advance of renewables. While wind and solar saw significant growth, this did not offset rising consumption needs. Asia and Central America saw the largest increases, while Europe saw a rebound in consumption for the first time since 2021. Global gas production has increased, but in Europe it has fallen, and China has become a major player in the gas market. The analysis highlights a messy energy transition with challenges in Europe.
