Starting July 15, Gibraltar is preparing to eliminate border controls with Spain, a historic change that will allow the free movement of people and goods. This measure is the result of an agreement between the European Union and post-Brexit Britain, having the potential to bring significant economic benefits to both parties.

The residents of La Línea de la Concepción, the neighboring Spanish town, are eagerly awaiting this change, considering that many of them work in Gibraltar. The removal of controls will reduce the queues at the border, which affect thousands of people daily. The mayor of the town, Juan Franco, emphasizes the economic importance of this measure, given the local dependence on the revenues generated by Gibraltar. Additionally, the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, believes that the new agreement will boost tourism and improve trade relations.

However, the new rules will impose compliance with EU standards and the introduction of a transaction tax, which could affect the competitiveness of local businesses. Residents are already adapting to the changes, and the dismantling of the border fence has begun.
