The Berlin government has said it does not expect increased defense spending to be considered a breach of EU budget deficit rules. Although Germany's deficit is forecast at 3.3% of GDP, defense spending is expected to account for 0.3%. The European commission will assess the situation in the spring, and an EU rearmament plan could allow countries to increase their military budgets without breaking budget rules.
