Germany, under the leadership of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has launched an ambitious disarmament plan with a budget of 377 billion euros, aimed at transforming the Bundeswehr into the strongest conventional army in Europe. This plan includes extensive acquisitions in the land, air, maritime, space, and cyber domains, with approximately 320 new weapon projects planned.
The document details that most acquisitions will be made through German companies, with Rheinmetall and Diehl Defence as the main beneficiaries. Notable projects include the acquisition of 687 Puma vehicles, 561 IRIS-T air defense systems, and advanced drones. Germany also intends to invest in satellite programs and acquire F-35 aircraft, thus maintaining close ties with the United States.
This initiative coincides with a change in defense funding policy, excluding defense spending from the constitutional debt brake, thus allowing for sustained long-term expenditure. The plan reflects Germany's commitment to strengthen its defense capabilities and ensure national security in an increasingly complex geopolitical context.
