The German Football Association (DFB) and FIFA will decide autonomously whether to boycott the 2026 World Cup, largely organized in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Secretary of State for Sports, Christiane Schenderlein, emphasized that the government respects the autonomy of sports and that decisions regarding participation in major sporting events belong exclusively to the federations.

Recent tensions generated by the United States' desire to take control of Greenland and threats of increased tariffs have led to calls in Germany for a possible boycott. Almost 47% of Germans would support a boycott in the event of the annexation of Greenland by the USA, according to a recent poll. Germany, a four-time world champion, has not missed any World Cup since the post-war period.
