Germany and Italy are intensifying their collaboration to influence the European agenda, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz promoting a common vision at EU summits. This cooperation calls into question the traditional Franco-German axis. Meloni stated that 2026 will be "the year of Italy and Germany," emphasizing the importance of a strategic friendship for Europe.

The two leaders agreed to collaborate on various issues, including immigration, trade policy, and defense. Additionally, Meloni supported the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, despite opposition from France. Relations between Berlin and Rome are now closer, and Italy seeks a leadership role in the EU.

In contrast, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the Franco-German axis remains essential, but acknowledges that broader collaboration is necessary. Tensions between France and Germany, particularly regarding the Mercosur agreement and defense programs, have led Berlin to seek new partnerships, thereby strengthening ties with Italy.
