Tens of thousands of young people are expected to take to the streets on Saturday in around 30 cities across Germany, including Berlin, Frankfurt and Cologne, to demand increased funding for education and better conditions in schools and universities. The demonstrations are being organized by the “GenZ regelt” group, amid authorities’ concerns about possible acts of violence and vandalism, heightened by recent protests in France and incidents associated with Halloween.
Approximately 160,000 people have registered online for the actions. Organizers say the movement brings together pupils, students and apprentices dissatisfied with the state of educational institutions, the rising cost of living and the possibility of reinstating compulsory military service. Protesters also want to draw attention to the effects of climate change.
Germany’s official student organization, BSK, is not taking part, citing the group’s lack of transparency and warning of the risk of violence. BSK has announced its own peaceful protests for November 20.
Police will deploy several thousand officers, while some shops have protected their storefronts. The Interior Ministry says there is currently no information about concrete plans for violence, but is monitoring the possible arrival of radical activists from abroad. Organizers say they have volunteers to coordinate the demonstrations and reject any form of violence.
