The leaders of the Group of Twenty (G20) adopted a statement regarding the climate crisis and other global challenges, despite objections from the United States, which boycotted the event. The White House accused South Africa of using its position as the group's leader to undermine the principles of the G20. The spokesperson for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that the statement cannot be renegotiated, emphasizing the intense efforts made to adopt it. Additionally, Argentina, an ally of the U.S., withdrew from negotiations before the text was adopted, expressing concerns about how the document addresses geopolitical issues, particularly the conflict in the Middle East. Ramaphosa proceeded with the adoption of the statement despite these tensions. Donald Trump is eagerly awaiting the U.S. G20 presidency next year to restore the legitimacy of the group.
