German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Monday that his coalition government with the Social Democrats will continue its work following the regional election defeats suffered by the conservative party on Sunday. Merz argued that the coalition’s stability is essential to Germany’s “democratic future.”

In office for 16 months, the chancellor dismissed speculation about a possible departure and promised to continue reforms, despite the government’s declining popularity. He announced that he would discuss the next steps with the leaders of the two parties, saying that maintaining their cooperation was the right solution.

The Social Democrats said they intend to remain in government, but called for the executive’s position to be reviewed, particularly regarding pension reform. Merz did not provide details about any possible changes.

The chancellor said the government’s measures had contributed to a slight improvement in the economy, which has been affected by competition from China and high energy costs. He acknowledged, however, that public support remains low and that the government must regain its ability to convince a significant portion of the population.
