Friedrich Merz, German Chancellor and leader of the CDU, declared war on the far right, emphasizing that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the main opponent of his party in the five regional elections scheduled for next year. Merz accused the AfD of wanting to destroy the CDU and of challenging the fundamental values of German democracy.
Although some members of the CDU and CSU have suggested cooperation with the AfD, Merz rejected these calls, stating that the far-right party offers a "hand" that actually wants to destroy the CDU. The 2024 elections are particularly important, as the AfD is gaining ground in both eastern and western Germany, and polls suggest that they could achieve significant results.
