France has introduced a new regulation that transforms exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 kilometers per hour into a crime, with possible penalties of up to three months in prison and fines of 3,750 euros. This legislative change, recently published in the Official Gazette, will also have consequences on the criminal record of drivers, affecting their civil life.

Previously, such violations were only punished with fines of up to 1,500 euros and the loss of six points from the license, and the crime was recognized only in cases of recidivism. The Interministerial Delegation for Road Safety emphasized that the old sanctioning system did not reflect the seriousness and increased frequency of these acts, considering that in 2024 there were 63,217 violations recorded, a 69% increase compared to 2017. Excessive speed is the second leading cause of fatal accidents, with 3,190 deaths recorded in 2024.
