The French Parliament has adopted in the first reading a bill that prohibits the use of social networks for individuals under the age of 15, a measure aimed at protecting the health of children and adolescents. The European Commission has confirmed that France has the right to establish a digital age of majority, and major online platforms must comply with national legislation.
The European executive will monitor the implementation of this measure, ensuring that platforms implement it correctly. If the law is adopted, France will become the first country in the EU to impose such rules, following the example of Australia. The French government intends to enforce the ban starting with the 2026-2027 school year for new accounts and will implement an age verification system for all users by 2027.
