Former parliamentarian and Russian businessman Umar Dzhabrailov has been found dead. A preliminary investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of the death.

Umar Dzhabrailov, a businessman and former parliamentarian aged 67, committed suicide in Moscow, according to police sources cited by The Moscow Times. Dzhabrailov was found with a gunshot wound to the head in a luxury residential complex and, although he was rushed to the hospital, doctors were unable to save his life.

The authorities have opened a preliminary investigation but have not officially confirmed that it is a suicide, considering that Dzhabrailov had previously attempted to take his own life in 2020. Born in Grozny, he was a senator from 2004 to 2009 and ran for president in 2000, receiving less than 0.1% of the votes. Dzhabrailov had legal troubles, including an incident in 2017 when he fired a gun in a hotel, and his former business partner, Paul Tatum, was killed in 1996 after Dzhabrailov was accused of extortion.
