Former Bulgarian MEP Slavi Binev was shot dead on Saturday morning at his home in Sofia. A Turkish businessman, Eyup Temiz, was charged with murder, and the Sofia Municipal Court ruled on Tuesday to keep him in pre-trial detention.

The investigation concerns a possible financial dispute involving 500,000 euros. According to information published by the Bulgarian press, Binev may have received the sum to mediate a conflict over the division of properties owned by the businessman's wife and an architect. On the morning of the crime, the victim allegedly had a tense phone conversation with the suspect's wife, after which the latter allegedly went to the former MEP's home.

According to reports not officially confirmed, the confrontation allegedly escalated, and Temiz allegedly shot Binev in the head with a legally owned pistol. Prosecutors have not yet confirmed the motive for the crime.

Surveillance camera footage shows three men allegedly leaving the home after the attack and heading toward a Range Rover. Investigators are also examining a second similar SUV to determine whether other people were involved in the crime.

Context: initial investigation following Slavi Binev’s death in Sofia and the theory of a personal dispute

Before the trial and court decisions, Slavi Binev was shot dead at his home in the Pavlovo district of Sofia. The incident was reported to the police shortly before 10:30, and the ambulance arrived approximately seven minutes later; according to unconfirmed information, he may have been struck in the head and body.

The authorities launched an investigation to identify those responsible and establish the motive, while the Bulgarian press reported that the murder could have been connected to an argument or personal dispute. Police were searching for an SUV they had indications may have been used in the attack, and there were also unconfirmed reports of arrests.
