The state of Florida has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming that the ChatGPT chatbot poses a threat to public safety. Attorney General James Uthmeier mentioned in the complaint cases where ChatGPT allegedly recommended potentially fatal combinations of medications and assisted an attacker prior to a deadly incident on a university campus. Uthmeier emphasized that the chatbot is particularly problematic for teenagers. OpenAI has implemented protective measures, including age detection systems and parental supervision tools, in response to public criticism and previous incidents. The state of Florida began an investigation in April regarding the role of ChatGPT in the April 2025 shooting, in which the attacker sought information about weapons and attack strategies. OpenAI has denied liability for the attack, which resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to six others.
