An alarming report from the Civil Liberties Union for Europe warns that the governments of Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, and Slovakia are intentionally eroding the rule of law.
These countries are labeled as "demolishers," weakening democratic standards in various areas, including justice and press freedom. In Slovakia, under the leadership of Robert Fico, there has been significant regression, while in Hungary, regressive policies continue without signs of change. Other states, such as Belgium and France, have experienced partial decline, while Poland is in a state of stagnation.
The report criticizes the ineffectiveness of EU mechanisms, highlighting that most recommendations from previous years have not been implemented. Additionally, restrictions on fundamental rights and attacks on journalists have been observed in several states.
Romania is classified in the report as a "stagnant" state, with the absence of consistent progress in strengthening the rule of law being emphasized, but also the lack of systemic regression.
