Following a devastating explosion in an illegal mine in the East Jaintia Hills district of India, 18 bodies have been found, according to a police statement.
Rescue teams have begun operations to search the site, checking if other miners are trapped inside. The explosion, which was likely caused by the detonation of dynamite, generated a fire and the accumulation of toxic gases. Although the exploitation of these clandestine mines has been banned since 2014 due to environmental and safety risks, the practice remains common in Meghalaya. The Chief Minister of the state, Conrad K. Sangma, has announced a thorough investigation to establish accountability.
