The WHO draws attention to the risks of heatwaves for vulnerable people. A new wave of heat is expected.

Weather forecasts indicate that temperatures in Portugal and southern Spain could reach 43 degrees Celsius in the coming days, in the context of extreme heat episodes affecting Europe. These warnings come after a severe heatwave recorded between June 20 and June 28, 2026, which caused approximately 3,700 deaths in France, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

The regional director of the WHO for Europe, Hans Kluge, emphasized that less than half of European countries have national plans to protect the population during heatwaves, which has led to pressures on health systems. Vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, are the most at risk.

Experts warn that Europe is warming rapidly and that, without adequate measures, heatwaves will become increasingly frequent and severe, affecting public health and the economy.
