According to Eurostat data, the EU population reached 450.4 million on January 1, 2025, thanks to a positive net migration balance of 2.3 million, offsetting a natural decline of 1.3 million. Since 2012, deaths have outnumbered births, highlighting demographic challenges such as an ageing population and declining fertility. Germany, France and Italy remain the most populous countries, while Romania ranks sixth in the EU with a population of 19.036 million.
