The European Union strongly condemns Saturday’s attack by Israeli settlers on a European diplomatic convoy visiting the occupied West Bank. A French mayor was struck during the incident, amid escalating violence against Palestinians and journalists reporting on the olive harvest.

An EU diplomacy spokesperson said Sunday that the Union takes note of the condemnations issued by several Israeli officials, but expects “full accountability.” Brussels is calling for effective measures to prevent further acts of violence and harassment, especially during the current olive harvest season.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the attack and attributed it to “Israeli rioters,” while also criticizing the European consulates for allegedly failing to coordinate the visit with the Israeli army. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office subsequently denounced what it called a campaign of “defamation” against Israel and the settlers.

The incident took place a day after American photographer Heidi Levine, of The Washington Post, was seriously injured by settlers. Last week, an AFP photographer was also beaten. The EU again called on Israel to respect international law and halt the expansion of settlements.

Context: Attacks on Palestinians and journalists in the West Bank during the olive harvest season

Before the incident, a diplomatic delegation was attacked in the West Bank by masked Israeli settlers while assessing the security situation and violence against Palestinians. During the attack, the French mayor was struck, and a Belgian consulate vehicle was damaged. Israeli forces condemned the incident and announced an investigation, while the Belgian foreign minister called for European measures and sanctions against violent settlers.

In the same context, an American photojournalist was seriously injured after being attacked by Israeli settlers while reporting on the olive harvest. Earlier reports also mentioned interventions by Israeli forces, as well as the use of tear gas against Palestinians, while car and plantation fires were reported in other localities.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials condemned violence committed by settlers in certain villages in the West Bank, and the American administration called on the Israeli prime minister to publicly condemn such actions. The pressure came amid intensifying tensions and repeated attacks on Palestinians and those documenting the situation on the ground.
