A group of six monkeys, rhesus macaques, managed to escape from an animal sanctuary in the town of Witten, Germany, according to the DPA agency. It is believed that the animals, known for their intelligence and shyness, dug out the mortar from a brick wall, thus facilitating their escape. As of Thursday afternoon, the monkeys had not been recovered.
The television station WDR mentioned that these monkeys are referred to as "temple monkeys" and were housed in the sanctuary for animal welfare reasons. Local authorities stated that the animals do not pose a danger to the public, and emergency services are not actively searching for them. However, citizens who spot the monkeys are encouraged to contact the police or firefighters to facilitate their capture.
