Egypt, one of the largest importers of wheat, has transferred responsibility for international grain procurement from the General Authority for Supply (GASC) to Future of Egypt, a military-linked body. The move comes amid high inflation and deteriorating living conditions, as wheat imports are essential for producing subsidized bread for the majority of the population. Wheat imports also fell by 30% in the first half of the year, and traders face a less predictable procurement process.
