The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has proposed a maximum threshold of 0.014 micrograms per kilogram of body weight for cereulide toxin in powdered milk intended for infants, following contamination detected at a factory in China.

This recommendation could lead to additional product withdrawals from the market, according to the French Ministry of Agriculture. The producer Popote has already announced the withdrawal of two batches of powdered milk. EFSA's recommendations are not legally binding, but national authorities often use them to decide on withdrawals or sales restrictions. Additionally, some large infant formula companies, such as Nestlé and Danone, have internal thresholds below this level, which could exempt them from further withdrawals according to experts.
