Three tornadoes struck the regions near the city of Chicago, causing significant damage in places like Merrillville and Streator.
The storms led to flight cancellations and power outages for hundreds of thousands of people. The mayor of Streator, Tara Bedei, confirmed that no deaths have been reported, but emphasized the major damages. In Des Moines, Iowa, a man died after a tree fell on him during the storms. The tornadoes damaged buildings, including an animal shelter in Springfield, where all the animals survived.
Meteorologists warned that the storms are moving east, and extreme heat and high humidity are affecting the East Coast, with record temperatures expected. Airports in Chicago and New York reported massive delays and cancellations of flights, and the electricity company in Illinois announced that it expects the situation to be remedied by about 80% by Saturday.
