Wildfires have affected the islands of Sardinia and Sicily on Saturday, leading to the temporary closure of Costa Smeralda airport and the blockage of several roads.

Several wildfires have broken out in Italy, affecting the islands of Sardinia and Sicily.

The flames have led to the temporary closure of Costa Smeralda Airport in Olbia and the blockage of important arteries, including the national road SS125. To limit the fires, authorities have mobilized helicopters, firefighting planes, and numerous intervention teams. Airport operations resumed around 7:00 PM, after scheduled aircraft were redirected to other airports. Although the situation has stabilized in Olbia, authorities warn that the risk of fires remains high in several areas of the island.

Sicily is also facing wildfires. In the province of Palermo, several hotspots have led to the preventive evacuation of about ten homes and have consumed large areas of forest.

The wave of fires in Italy comes shortly after the tragedy in Spain, where 12 people lost their lives due to wildfires that affected several regions.
