An explosion occurred at the petrochemical refinery of the MOL group in Tiszaújváros, Hungary, resulting in the death of one person and the serious injury of several others.

Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced on Facebook that the Minister of Economy, Istvan Kapitany, and the Executive Chairman of MOL, Zsolt Hernadi, are heading to the scene of the incident.

The explosion happened during the restart of the Olefin 1 plant, and the fire has been contained by firefighters, with intervention ongoing.

Kapitany mentioned that a compressor exploded, and the circumstances of the accident are being investigated by experts.

The Olefin 1 plant has a production capacity of approximately 370,000 tons of ethylene per year, primarily used for the production of plastics. MOL owns two steam cracking facilities in Tiszaújváros, with a total capacity of 660,000 tons of ethylene per year.
