This increase was driven by the heightened need to protect citizens, following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. For the year 2025, nearly 130 billion euros have been directed towards the acquisition of new armaments, and NATO member states, including 23 from the European Union, have committed to allocate 5% of GDP for security over the next ten years. To reach the target of 3.5% of GDP dedicated to military spending, the European Union will need to invest over 630 billion euros annually.
