The main naval base of Cyprus, Evangelos Florakis, will receive a new heliport, funded by the U.S. European Command, intended for Chinook helicopters for evacuation from conflict zones. Additionally, the Andreas Papandreou airbase will be expanded with a platform for heavy transport aircraft, facilitating their refueling and maintenance. The projects, which will begin next year, are part of U.S. efforts to support Cyprus in responding to humanitarian crises. The exact funding has not been disclosed, but the U.S. has allocated 500,000 euros for the assessment of the costs of expanding the airbase. Diplomatic relations between Cyprus and the U.S. have significantly improved, and Cyprus is leveraging its geographical position to become a link between the West and the Middle East. The modernization of facilities will also include a regional coordination center for firefighting operations, which will be inaugurated next month.
