The energy crisis is caused by the aging electric grid and the blockade imposed by the U.S., which has led to disruptions in fuel supply. Before Monday's incident, nearly two-thirds of the population did not have access to electricity.

The Trump administration intensified pressure on Cuba, labeling the Cuban government a threat and imposing tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba. Negotiations between the U.S. and Cuba began, but were conditioned on the resignation of President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
