On Sunday, high-ranking Ukrainian officials began discussions with Donald Trump's negotiation team, marking a potentially decisive week for American diplomacy in an attempt to end the Russian invasion. The meeting, which included Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, took place after reported progress following last week's discussions in Geneva. Ukraine and its European partners are calling for significant changes to an initial U.S. proposal, which also included contributions from Russia.

This intensification of diplomacy comes amid political pressures on President Zelensky, who recently dismissed a chief of staff following a corruption investigation. At the same time, Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine, including on the capital and critical infrastructure, while Ukraine is intensifying its drone strikes on Russian facilities. A recent attack on a petroleum facility provoked a reaction from Kazakhstan, which called for an end to these strikes, considering the impact on global oil supply.
