Cristian Herrera, a Colombian journalist and member of the board of the Foundation for Press Freedom (FLIP), was killed on Saturday in the border town of Cúcuta, located in northeastern Colombia. An armed man on a motorcycle shot him dead, and Herrera later died in the hospital.

The Office of the Ombudsman confirmed the incident, emphasizing that violence has once again affected journalism in Colombia.

Herrera covered topics such as impunity, organized crime, and corruption, especially in the Catatumbo region, known for violent confrontations between guerrilla groups. Although the journalist had received threats and was under government protection, the security measures were not sufficient to prevent his assassination.

According to FLIP, at least 170 journalists have been killed in Colombia since 1977, highlighting the risks faced by media professionals.
