On Saturday evening, protests in Serbia escalated, leading to violent clashes between Serbian police and protesters demanding an end to the government of President Aleksandar Vucic. Around 140,000 people took part in the protests and police intervened with force after demonstrators threw objects at officers. Vucic accused the protesters of trying to overthrow the government, while students and the opposition denounced the violence and repression by the authorities. The protests were sparked by a tragic accident and have been fuelled by allegations of corruption and links to organized crime.
