In May 2025, China installed an impressive 93 gigawatts of photovoltaic capacity, setting a new world record and surpassing the European Union's annual additions. This success comes amid a transition to a system based on free market transactions, replacing the old subsidy system. Although China remains the biggest global polluter, massive investments in renewable energy led to a 1.6% reduction in CO2 emissions in the first quarter of 2025.
